Accessible attraction planning: how the process works
Large sites plan access as a system: parking, shuttle, route, building, restroom, exit. Understanding the chain tells you which link to ask about.

Attractions do not become accessible by adding a ramp. The good ones plan a whole chain, and knowing what the chain is tells you exactly what to ask.
The seven links
Parking. Number of accessible spaces, distance, surface, and whether they fill early.
Transport within the site. Shuttles, trams, carts. At large sites this is the difference between seeing one building and seeing the place, and most of them stop running out of season.
The route. Surfaces, gradients, distance between points, and seating along the way, which is what makes a folding stool or seat cane worth its weight.
The entrance. Level or ramped, main or separate, staffed or not.
The interior. Lifts, circulation, exhibits at reachable heights, seating.
Restrooms. Location, number, and whether they are in service.
The exit, including in an emergency, which is the link nobody asks about.
Ask which of the seven is weakest at that site. Staff answer honestly and it saves the visit.
Large historic sites: the shuttle question
At sprawling historic sites the shuttle is usually the whole answer.
Gettysburg's accessibility information shows how that works in practice across a very large site of monuments and roads, where the visitor center, the tour route and the individual stops each need separate consideration.
Ask whether the shuttle is running on your date, whether it takes your equipment, and what the alternative is if it is not.
Vertical sites: the lift question
Some attractions are essentially one piece of vertical engineering, and access depends on a specific machine working.
The Gateway Arch is the clearest case, and its accessibility pages set out what is available at ground level, what the tram to the top involves, and where the limits are. Sites of this kind are honest about what cannot be adapted, which is more useful than vagueness.
For any site where one machine is the access route, ask what happens when it is out of service, and whether tickets are refunded.
Historic buildings
Old buildings solve this with a mixture of ramps, lifts, alternative entrances and, sometimes, an honest statement that a floor cannot be reached.
Where a site says plainly that the upper floor is not accessible and offers a virtual tour or a ground-floor equivalent, that is a well-planned answer rather than a failure.
The order to plan in
Read the site's own accessibility page. Telephone with the two or three questions it does not answer. Book the timed entry if there is one. Confirm the week before.
Nothing else in this process matters as much as the telephone call, because it is the only step that reflects today's condition of the building.
What good looks like
Specific numbers, named alternatives, an honest list of what is not accessible, and a member of staff who can be reached in advance.

Common questions
Do I need to book in advance? Where timed entry exists, yes, and ask about flexibility if a transfer runs late.
Is a free site less accessible? No relationship. Federal sites are frequently free and among the best documented.
What if the accessible route is much longer? Common at historic sites. Ask about drop-off points, which frequently exist and are rarely advertised.
Should I bring my own seat? On long routes with little seating, a folding stool solves more problems than people expect.
